The Mizuno Tour Truck: A Sneak Peek Inside

Today, we have the opportunity to take a closer look at the Mizuno Tour truck, which recently arrived at AFGolfStore in Cambridge. Joining us on this exciting tour is Joe, the senior tour rep for Mizuno.

Let’s dive right in and see what this amazing facility has to offer.

Inside the Tour Truck

Joe, who spends around 20 to 23 weeks a year working on the European Tour, takes us through the different sections of the truck dedicated to helping Mizuno players optimize their performance on the course.

Loft and Lie Machine

One of the most important machines in the truck is the loft and lie machine. It ensures that the players’ clubs are perfectly dialed in week after week. Alongside it, we find the gripping station, where the players’ grips are maintained and checked regularly. These two machines are the most popular and essential for the players’ performance.

Keeping on Top of Lie Angles

While players don’t typically change lie angles week to week, they do check them regularly to ensure they are correct. Mizuno’s forged and premium products, known for their softness, can be affected by terrains and grounds. The amount of play and practice also requires constant monitoring of the lie angles.

Shaft Measuring and Cutting

Continuing the tour, we come across some big and chunky machines dedicated to shaft measuring and cutting. The truck houses tip grinders and a grinding machine at the end, all essential for keeping the players’ clubs in optimal condition. The grinding machine is primarily used for tip grinding, which ensures proper adhesion of the glue. Additionally, it can be used to grind the heads of the clubs if necessary.

Customisation for Lob Wedges

When it comes to grinding heads, the focus is often on the lob wedges. By taking a bit out of the heel, players can achieve the desired look and performance when opening up their lob wedges. Once players find a configuration they like, they typically stick with it.

The Impressive Shaft Wall

As we move further into the truck, we encounter the shaft wall, showcasing an extensive collection of shafts. Among the various options, the Ventus shaft stands out as one of the most popular choices for drivers. Mizuno prides itself on offering a wide range of shafts to suit every player’s preference and playing style.

The Classic Project X and Dynamic Gold

When it comes to irons, the most popular shafts on tour are the Project X and Dynamic Gold. These classic choices provide the strength and control that many professional players desire. Mizuno caters to the preferences of athletes who prefer heavier and firmer shafts for their irons.

Grips for Every Player

In the drawers of the tour truck, we find an array of grips, each tailored to the individual players’ preferences. Among them, Luke Donald’s multi compound blue black and Keith Mitchell’s victory grips stand out as unique choices. These personalized grips add that extra touch of individuality for the players.

Luke’s and Keith’s Grip Preferences

While Luke opts for the blue black multi compound grip, Keith prefers the classic victory grip. These grips are specifically made for a select few players in Europe and showcase their personal style and preferences.

From Grip Drawers to Head Storage

Interestingly, each player has their own designated drawer for grips on the truck, allowing for easy access and personalisation. However, when it comes to club heads, they are stored in drawers on the side of the truck. It’s worth noting that the heads used on tour are the same as those available to the public, highlighting Mizuno’s commitment to consistency and quality.

The Transition to New Products

This year, Mizuno released the new 241-243-245 range of irons. When asked about players’ response to the new product, Joe explains that the transition has been seamless. With blades, the performance is the key factor, and the new irons offer improved aesthetics and a brushed matte chrome finish that reduces glare. The combination sets, such as the 245, have also gained popularity among players.

Combo Sets for Versatility

The combo sets, which feature a mix of different Mizuno irons, are favored by many players. Typically, players opt for the 2 iron, 4 iron, and 5 iron in a more forgiving profile while using blades in the shorter irons. The smaller jump in head size between these clubs makes for a smooth transition and enhanced performance. The feedback from players during testing has been positive, emphasising the importance of finding the right fit.

Building Sets for Players

On average, Mizuno builds two to three sets of irons for each player per year. The need for a new set can arise from worn-out clubs or simply as a backup set. In addition to irons, players often require regular changes to their wedges, especially lob wedges that undergo extensive practice and play. Mizuno ensures that the players’ clubs are always in top condition to meet their performance expectations.

Exploring the Wood Range

While Mizuno may not have the same level of marketing as some other brands, their wood range is gaining traction and recognition among both professionals and enthusiasts. Joe highlights two standout products: the ST Max and the STG.

The ST Max Surprise

The ST Max, known for its stability and sleek appearance at address, has been a pleasant surprise for Mizuno. It features a larger profile and a back weight that enhances stability during powerful drives. Players can rely on the ST Max to maintain stability and control, even with high swing speeds.

Fast Speed with the ST-G

Another notable addition to the wood range is the ST-G. Offering exceptional speed and stability, this club has garnered attention from players looking for maximum performance. Mizuno encourages players to compare their products against competitors to truly appreciate their capabilities.

Swing Weight Matters

One crucial aspect of club customisation is the swing weight. Mizuno takes pride in matching the swing weights precisely to the players’ specifications. While some players are more particular about swing weight than others, Mizuno ensures that every club is built to the exact same swing weight as specified by the player.

Changing Heads and Shaft Effects

Players do notice the changes in swing weight when heads and shafts are modified. These alterations can significantly impact performance. Mizuno’s attention to detail and consistency in swing weight help players maintain their desired feel and control throughout their game.

Wrapping Up the Tour

As our tour of the Mizuno Tour truck comes to an end, we extend our gratitude to Joe for giving us an inside look at this remarkable facility. If you haven’t already, we highly recommend visiting one of our stores where you can experience the full range of Mizuno products. At AF’s Golf Store, we offer Mizuno fitting services and have the necessary equipment in our build center to ensure that you find the perfect clubs for your game. The Mizuno Tour truck serves as a testament to Mizuno’s commitment to excellence and their dedication to helping players reach their full potential on the golf course.

Mizuno’s Latest Iron: The Pro 24 Range

In this blog, we will be discussing Mizuno’s latest iron, the Pro 24 range. Mizuno is known for producing high-quality golf equipment, and their new iron range is no exception.

We will explore the different models in the range, their features, and who they are best suited for. Whether you are a professional golfer or a beginner looking to improve your game, the Pro 24 range offers something for everyone.

The Pro 24 Range

The Pro 24 range consists of three models: the 241, 243, and 245. Each model caters to different playing styles and skill levels.

241 Model

The 241 model is a classic blade iron from Mizuno. It features a sleek design that appeals to golfers of all levels. The club is progressive, meaning that the longer clubs have a slightly larger head, while the shorter irons are more compact. This design ensures optimal performance throughout the set. The 241 model also offers increased bounce compared to the previous generation, which helps with turf interaction and maintaining ball speed.

243 Model

The 243 model is a cavity back iron, providing a blend of forgiveness and performance. This model incorporates technology to enhance ball speed on off-centre hits. A micro slot behind the face promotes increased ball speed without compromising the feel of the club.

The 243 model also features a wraparound design on the back edge of the club head, allowing for smoother turf interaction during scoring shots.

245 Model

The 245 model is a hollow body design iron that offers the highest level of forgiveness in the Pro24 range. It features a separate material for the face and back edge, as well as a tungsten weight in the body. The tungsten weight helps promote a higher launch and lower centre of gravity, resulting in increased distance and stopping power.  The 245 model is an excellent option for golfers looking for maximum forgiveness without sacrificing performance.

Suitability and Custom Fit Options

The Pro 24 range is well-suited for a range of golfers, from single-figure handicappers to lowish teens. The ability to blend the different models allows golfers to customise their set according to their specific needs. For example, if a golfer prefers the feel and performance of the 243 model but requires additional help with longer irons, they can easily blend in the 245 model. This versatility has made the Pro 24 range extremely popular among golfers.

Mizuno offers extensive custom fit options for all their irons including the Pro 24 range. They provide various shaft options, including KBS, Nippon, Dynamic Gold, and Project X. This ensures that golfers can find the perfect shaft for their swing. Additionally, the irons can be adjusted for length, lie angle, and loft to further optimise performance.

Whether you are a beginner or an experienced golfer, the Pro 24 range can be tailored to suit your individual requirements.

Conclusion

If you are in the market for a new set of irons, the Mizuno Pro 24 range is an excellent place to start. With its range of models and customisation options, there is a perfect fit for every player. Whether you prefer the classic blade design of the 241 model, the forgiveness and technology of the 243 model, or the maximum forgiveness of the 245 model, Mizuno has you covered.

Mizuno Pro Range 241 Iron

Welcome back to the blog! Today, we have some exciting products to showcase to you. Introducing the Mizuno Pro Range new for 2024! In this blog, we will be taking an in-depth look at the 241 model from the Mizuno Pro Range.

This iron is a pure blade, with an aggressively tapered top that gives it a stunning appearance. We will explore its design, performance, and overall value for money. So, let’s dive right in!

The Design of the Mizuno Pro 241 Iron

The Mizuno Pro Range 241 iron is a beautifully crafted golf club that will catch the eye of any golfer.

With its clean and sleek look, it is no wonder that golfers worldwide would love to have this iron in their bag. The 241 iron is specifically designed for golfers who prioritise feel over distance. Its loft sits at 34°, making it the weakest iron in the Mizuno Pro Range.

If you are someone who enjoys the challenge of controlling your shots and values the sensation of a well-struck iron, then the 241 is the perfect choice for you. However, if you are looking for an iron that delivers maximum distance, you may want to consider the 245 or 243 models instead, as they offer slightly stronger lofts.

The Mizuno Pro Range offers both right-handed and left-handed options for golfers. Right-handed golfers can choose from a three to wedge option, while left-handed golfers have a four to wedge option. Unfortunately, left-handed golfers do not have the luxury of a three iron in this range. Nevertheless, the availability of options ensures that golfers can find the perfect fit for their game.

Performance and Feel

Now, let’s talk about the performance and feel of the Mizuno Pro Range 241 iron. When it comes to feel, the 241 iron does not disappoint. A well-struck shot with this iron feels absolutely stunning. The feedback you get from a pure strike is unparalleled. It’s the kind of feeling that every golfer longs for.

However, maintaining distance and control with the 241 iron can be a challenge. The smaller head size and the design make it difficult to consistently find the middle of the clubface. This iron requires a high level of ball-striking ability and precision. If you are not a consistent ball striker, you might find it frustrating to use this iron.

Additionally, the trackman numbers show that the performance of the 241 iron falls short compared to other forged clubs. Even when hitting solid shots, the distance achieved is not on par with other irons in its class. This could potentially lead to anxiety on the golf course, as you may be uncertain about achieving the correct distance with each shot.

Scoring and Overall Value

Now, let’s evaluate the Mizuno Pro Range 241 iron using our scoring system. In terms of look, the 241 iron receives a perfect score of 10 out of 10. Its stunning design is sure to impress any golfer.

When it comes to feel, the 241 iron also scores a perfect 10 out of 10. The sensation of a well-struck shot is unmatched. DISCLAIMER! The thin shots are certainly not a 10!!

In terms of custom fit options, the Mizuno Pro Range could use some improvement. While they offer the ability to blend sets, more options in terms of graphite shafts and customisation would be beneficial. Therefore, we give the custom fit options a score of 7 out of 10.

Price-wise, the 241 iron offers good value for money. While it is not the most affordable option on the market, it is reasonably priced compared to other irons of similar quality. We give the price a score of 7 out of 10.

Finally, when considering the overall performance, the 241 iron falls short with a score of 5 out of 10. Its difficulty in maintaining distance and control, even for golfers with decent ball-striking ability, hinders its overall performance.

Conclusion

In conclusion, the Mizuno Pro Range 241 iron is a visually stunning and exceptionally well-crafted golf club. It offers a unique playing experience, prioritising feel over distance. While it may not be the best choice for golfers seeking maximum forgiveness or distance, it caters to those who enjoy the challenge of controlling their shots.

However, it is important to note that the 241 iron requires a high level of skill to get the most out of it. If you are not a consistent ball striker, you may find it difficult to achieve the desired results with this iron. We recommend considering other options within the Mizuno Pro Range, such as the 245 or 243 models, which offer a blend of forgiveness and feel.

Overall, the Mizuno Pro Range 241 iron receives a score of 39 out of 50. While it excels in terms of look and feel, its performance leaves something to be desired.

If you are a golfer who values aesthetics and feel above all else, the 241 iron may be worth considering. However, if performance and forgiveness are your top priorities, we suggest exploring other options within the Mizuno Pro Range.

Mizuno Pro Range 245 Iron

Today, we are excited to showcase the latest addition to the Mizuno Pro Range for 2024. We have three new models to share with you: the 241, the 243, and the 245. In this blog, we will be focusing on the 245 iron and putting it to the test.

Keep reading to discover the impressive features and performance of this iron.

A Sleek and Deceptive Design

At first glance, the Mizuno 245 iron may appear similar to a blade, which might give some golfers pause.

However, what sets this iron apart is its hollow back construction.

The forgiveness and technology are concealed within the head, creating a sleek and elegant appearance.

Mizuno has taken it a step further by incorporating tungsten, allowing for precise control of the centre of gravity and optimal ball flight.

Testing the Mizuno 245 Iron

We took the Mizuno 245 iron to the Trackman bay at our Cambridge store for a thorough evaluation. Equipped with the Dynamic Gold 120 S300 shaft, we immediately noticed the compact and refined look of the 245 iron. The top edge is slightly thicker, providing a sense of forgiveness without compromising on aesthetics.

With a clubhead speed of 93 mph, the ball speed reached an impressive 120 mph, resulting in a carry distance of 170 yards. The 245 iron delivers consistent performance, offering forgiveness on off-center strikes while maintaining excellent ball speed.

The Feel and Performance

The Mizuno 245 iron truly lives up to its reputation for a forged feel. Every shot exudes confidence, even with less-than-perfect strikes. The combination of control and ball speed ensures a reliable and enjoyable experience on the course.

This iron strikes a delicate balance between being hot and uncontrollable, providing golfers with the best of both worlds.

Additionally, the Mizuno 245 iron seamlessly blends with other models in the range, making it suitable for custom combo sets. Golfers can opt for a longer iron set featuring the 245 iron for added forgiveness, while incorporating the 241 blade for a more traditional look and feel.

The AFGolf Score

Now, let’s break down the Mizuno 245 iron using our AFGolf Score:

  • Look: 9/10 – The sleek design and top-edge thickness make it visually appealing for any golfer.
  • Feel: 9/10 – The forged feel is unparalleled, providing excellent feedback and control.
  • Custom Options: 7/10 – Mizuno offers a wide range of custom options, but could improve their selection of graphite shafts.
  • Price: 7/10 – The Mizuno 245 iron is a high-quality product, but it comes with a higher price tag.
  • Performance: 8/10 – This iron competes favourably with other top models in its category, offering exceptional performance on the course.

With an AFGolf Score of 40 out of 50, the Mizuno 245 iron is poised to be one of the most sought-after irons in 2024. Its combination of style, forgiveness, and performance make it a must-try for golfers seeking a superior iron.

Mizuno Pro Range 243 Iron

Today, we have an exciting new product to showcase: the Mizuno Pro Range 243 Iron. This iron is the latest upgrade from Mizuno for 2024.

In this blog, we will delve into the features and performance of this iron to help you make an informed decision about your golf equipment.

The Design

The Mizuno Pro Range 243 Iron has undergone some significant changes compared to its predecessor, the 223 iron.

The new design features a more traditional forged look, with a small cavity back. The iron is made with the highest quality materials, including chromoly, nickel, and a copper underlay. These materials contribute to a softer feel and enhanced feedback.

The loft of the seven iron is 32°, which is slightly weaker than the 30° of the 245 iron. While this may affect ball speeds, Mizuno claims that the 243 iron is faster than the 223 iron.

Performance

Despite its classic appearance, the Mizuno Pro Range 243 Iron is packed with advanced technology.

Mizuno has a reputation for incorporating subtle tech features that may not be widely advertised. The company allows its products to speak for themselves, and this iron is no exception. When you use the 243 iron, you’ll immediately notice the difference in performance compared to the 223 iron.

The Pro Range 243 Iron is crafted with Mizuno ‘s Grain Flow Forge technology, using 1025 carbon steel. This combination has been perfected by Mizuno since 1968, ensuring exceptional quality and performance. One of the key improvements in the 243 iron is its interaction with the turf. Mizuno has focused on optimising the bounce, allowing the iron to glide smoothly through tight lies on the fairway.

When it comes to hitting shots with the 243 iron, you’ll experience a solid and satisfying feel. The iron feels substantial and provides excellent feedback. The additional weight and mass behind the head contribute to maintaining ball speeds, which is crucial for distance and control. The flight of the ball is impressive, and you won’t feel like you’re exerting too much effort. The smaller head size and refined shaping make the iron sit beautifully behind the ball.

It’s worth noting that the Mizuno Pro Range 243 Iron is not available for left-handed golfers. The set makeup consists of the four iron through to the pitching wedge. For longer irons, such as the three and four irons, you may consider using hybrids or other alternatives.

Comparison

If you’re considering the Mizuno Pro Range 243 Iron, it’s essential to explore its competitors. Three models that are worth comparing are the Srixon ZX7, the Ping Blueprint S, and the Titleist T150 Iron. These irons share similar characteristics, including a forged construction with a cavity back and a soft feel.

As a golfer, you should evaluate these options to determine the best fit for your game.

WATCH | Our Mizuno Product Reviews

Conclusion

The Mizuno Pro Range 243 Iron is an exceptional product that lives up to the brand’s reputation for quality and performance. Its classic design, combined with advanced technology, makes it a standout choice for serious golfers.

The iron offers a solid and satisfying feel, with improved ball speeds and excellent turf interaction. Although it may not be the most forgiving option, the 243 iron provides a buttery-soft feel that Mizuno is known for.

In terms of custom fit options, Mizuno could benefit from offering more graphite shaft options, especially for players who require lighter shafts due to age or swing speed. The price of the Mizuno Pro Range 243 Iron reflects its premium features and performance, making it a valuable investment. Overall, the iron receives high scores in look, feel, custom fit options, and performance.

If you’re in the market for new irons, the Mizuno Pro Range 243 Iron is definitely worth considering. Its impressive performance and timeless design make it a contender against other leading brands. Stay tuned for more reviews and updates!

Mizuno T24 Wedge Preview

In this Mizuno T24 wedge preview we will give you an insight into the newest wedge in the Mizuno T-Series wedge line.

The first big difference between the T24 and it’s predecessor, the T22, is the look. In the newer model you will notice a smaller, more refined look which Mizuno class as a teardrop look.

This is to give a neater, tighter look behind the ball, however the face remains the same size offering the same great level of ball striking.

Our first impression of the wedge is it looks great. Against the Vokey or Taylormade’s new MG4, the T24 doesn’t look out of place. It’s premium look is incredibly appealing on the eye.

The T24 wedges are grain-flow HD-forged from 1025 stainless with a boron kicker. The high density material behind the face offers Mizuno’s classic feel and response.

The next difference is Mizuno’s is the introduction of the V Sole grind. An additional grind to the T22’s 4 options. They’ve all carried over with the addition of V. This is inspired by their tour players who enjoy a higher bounce wedge whilst increasing relief from the toe and heel for better look, feel and shot making capabilities.

Quadcut+ grooves with HydroFlow microgrooves allows a tighter groove pattern for increased spin rates on all shots and this allows for maintained performance in wet conditions as the microgrooves will release moisture quickly giving you great response around the greens.

In our opinion, for years golfers of all levels will talk about the quality of Mizuno irons when coming to get a custom fittng, however, wedges often get overlooked as the go-to tends to be Vokey or other brands. However, the T24 certainly falls into the category of a classic Mizuno product, with great feel and performance and now with the refined design the look is just as good too!

From Custom Fitting To The Golf Course

From Custom Fitting To The Golf Course. This blog will give you an insight into what to expect from a fitting and how long it will take to get your new clubs out on the course.

If you’re thinking about getting new golf clubs for the season ahead, then you may want to consider a custom fitting at AFGolfStore.

Our mission is to encourage every golfer to try a custom fitting session so we can identify the best clubs to match your game.

This is done by offering thousands of possible club combinations made up from golfs leading club, shaft and grip brands as well as additional support in data from Trackman. Not to mention expert support from our team of custom fitters.

To ensure you are sold by this experience, we don’t charge, so all golfers have the chance to find the perfect solution for them and their game.

HOW LONG WILL MY NEW CLUBS TAKE?

We want to offer advice around a frequently asked question. How long will my new clubs take to be delivered and when can I get out on the course with them.

We have three potential routes to take, however, the routes will be determined on your specification and the clubs you require.

  1. STRAIGHT FROM THE RACK – All of our stores offer a wide range of what we fit in our studios on the displayed racks in store. All golf clubs displayed are standard specification i.e, the lie and length and standard to the manufacturers specifications. With adjustable sleeves, many woods will however be readily available on the day as we can adjust the setting to your specification. However, unless you are of standard spec, you generally won’t be taking this option.
  2. ORDERED FROM THE MANUFACTURER – If the product you were fit for  isn’t readily available to us then we will order direct with the brand manufacturer.
  3. BUILT BY US, FOR YOULocated at our Peterborough store, our build centre offers an in-house build service operated by us, for you. We build many of golf’s leading brands.

All three of these options will vary in delivery times. Off the rack, will allow you to take the clubs away on the same day whereas manufacturers lead times constantly vary throughout the year and can range from inside a week to as long as a month.

However, should your spec fall within the components available at our build centre, then we can offer a 72 hour build service that has you ready for the course with your new clubs in a speedy time.
