Matt Fitzpatrick Wins The 2023 Alfred Dunhill Championship

Matt Fitzpatrick wins the 2023 Alfred Dunhill Championship by three strokes over Ryan Fox, Marcus Armitage, and Matthew Southgate. After an extremely wet weekend the event was reduced to 54 holes after heavy rain wiped out play on Saturday and Sunday.

Following the jubilations of the Ryder Cup victory in Rome the weekend before, Matt started the final round with a two-shot lead, and he extended his lead to three shots with a birdie on the first hole. He then made a bogey on the second hole, but he birdied the fourth hole to regain his three-shot lead.

Fitzpatrick continued to play solid golf throughout the round, and he made a birdie on the 17th hole to seal the victory. He finished the tournament with a round of 66, and he had a total score of 19-under-par.

Fitzpatrick’s victory was his ninth professional title, and it was his first victory on the DP World Tour since 2021. He also won the 2022 U.S. Open.

This victory at the Dunhill Links Championship was a special one, as he was playing with his mother, Susan, in the pro-am event, which together they won the team prize as well with a total of -35.

It is always an exciting period when new clubs are announced and released, but on first impressions, this new range of Callaway irons really ramps up the excitement levels. The Callaway Apex Pro Series delivers on their slogan “Held To The Highest Standards” as their sleek design really stands out with great feel and performance.  

 

There are 3 new irons and two utility options. 

Apex Pro Irons:

Designed for exceptional distance with Tour-level precision in a total performance players iron. An innovative new multi-material forged construction is paired with our patented urethane microspheres to deliver unmatched feel. A progressive face design promotes powerful long irons and more precise short irons, and a Dynamic Sole Design promotes improved turf interaction and better contact.

Apex MB Irons:

Developed for the absolute best in the game who are looking for a high level of performance in a modern Tour blade. With our Dynamic Sole Design, it provides more efficient turf interaction, enhanced workability, and the classic feel that elite players expect.

Apex CB Irons:

Designed for the most discerning tour pros and elite ball-strikers. This tour-cavity back is designed with an all-new forged construction for a pure feel, precise shot-making, and workability.

All three of the iron heads are less offset than the previous Apex models offering a thinner top edge and look. The back weight plates can easily be unscrewed with a wrench and swapped out for different weights and unconfirmed rumours suggest they may even be customisable… that would be cool!

In the range is two utilities in the form of an iron and wood. The iron of course synonymous with Open conditions where you will need to keep the ball lower and running and no doubt we will see this club in the bag for The Open and US Open etc. However the wood is designed to battle the modern way of choice for players who are moving from hybrids to 7 woods for a steeper land angle. The problem with a lot of high lofted woods is they tend to turn over, so this wood is to sit between a hybrid and fairway metal but with a stable face and neutral look you can maintain higher land angles whilst keeping the ball straighter. 

Apex UT:

Designed to provide better players a powerful, yet versatile option off the tee when precision is paramount. The 455 forged face cup is engineered to provide exceptional distance while a revolutionary multi-material forged construction paired with our patented urethane microspheres delivers unmatched feel.

Apex UW:

A go-to option for Tour players. The unique profile promotes the launch and distance benefits of our high lofted fairway woods, the versatility of Callaway hybrids, along with a more neutral ball flight. It’s a multi-purpose offering that better players can use with confidence off the tee into tight landing areas, out of the fairway into Par-5s, or from the rough.

Wyndham Clark Wins The US Open

In a stunning display of golf, Wyndham Clark wins the US Open, overcoming a great four day battle mostly lead by Rickie Fowler and Rory Mcilroy.

This remarkable triumph is Wyndham’s first Major victory and only his second tour Victory, however, what makes this win so special is after qualifying for the PGA Tour in the 2018/19 season, Wyndham recorded his first ever tour victory at the Wells Fargo in May of 2023, only one month prior to his first Major. His patience has certainly paid as he has hit his peak form at the perfect time!

An intense week of golf at the LA Country Club which stood true to the US Open tradition of fast greens and the toughest of rough to catch out  any player who lost his accuracy.

After a very low scoring Thursday, as expected the course got tougher and scoring stabilised with the headlines being stolen by Rickie Fowler and his welcomed return to form following his 8-under 62 on Thursday was backed up by steady rounds to give him a 54 hole total of -10. 

Always in the mix, but flying more under the radar compared to Rickie was Wyndham Clark who also managed a 54 hole total of -10. With Rory Mcilroy also in the mix, it definitely felt

as though Wyndham was the low key underdog heading into Sunday.

As Sunday came, more noise began on whether Rory Mcilroy could find another Major after a 9 year drought or if Rickie Fowler could complete his return to form with his first Major. Very little noise was on the man who ultimately kept his cool and took home the 123rd US Open with an incredible final round. Although he was under pressure from Rory until the final putt on 18, Wyndham continued to do his job so well and claim his first Major.
