How Good Are Your Fundamentals?

How Good Are Your Fundamentals?

Two full weeks back in to offering golf lessons and I want to give you all some help with the most common, simple and overlooked part in golf that leads to bad habits in the golf swing.

For everyone striving to improve your scores & handicap moving into the winter months you must focus on your fundamentals. This is the key to your success.

The single most important and most overlooked full swing fundamental is the setup. The setup writes the script for the swing, and all too often all types of golfer will struggle the worse the setup is.

The golf setup position means having your body in positions that assist your golf swing once you've taken your stance.

A good setup position helps the golfer achieve three objectives:

  1. Maintain balance through the swing:

First, proper posture and foot placement allow you to maintain your balance throughout the swing. A great setup is the key to balance and consistent ball striking. It also allows you to help maintain balance when swinging the club. (Especially the faster you swing it)

  1. Create power and control the direction of the shot:

Second, a good setup helps you create power and control the direction of the shot. Key pre-swing elements, such as ball position and body alignment create the conditions that lead to control. The body angles that you create at address directly influence the path and angle on which you swing the club. They influence the actual in-swing body positions and movements.

  1. Make a fundamentally sound golf swing:

A great golf setup puts you in positions of advantage, making a fundamentally sound swing repeatable. Your swing evolves from your setup and if you want to achieve a reliable impact position, you can simply set up with that in mind with a consistently sound setup.

Jack Nicklaus once said, "If you set up correctly, there's a good chance you'll hit a reasonable shot, even if you make a mediocre swing. If you set up to the ball poorly, you'll hit a lousy shot even if you make the greatest swing in the world."

So, to recap, take care of your fundamentals/setup avid golfers. Remember it affects how you swing the club.

Our golf lessons in Cambridge, whether it is private or group, will help you master the fundamentals, and set you on path to better golf.
