5 Ways We Can Improve Your Game This May

The season is well underway, the sun is coming out on a daily basis and golf courses are beginning to look their best for the summer ahead. But why are you not playing your best golf? Here is 5 ways we can improve your golf this May, ready for the summer.

Golf Lessons

Yes, it’s obvious, golf lessons will help you play better golf, but that’s not all. Our coaching team are passionate about helping you make the necessary changes to your game to help you maximise your potential. It’s not just about the 30 or 60 minutes you spend with the coach. They will invest time into ensuring you leave happy and commit to being available by text, email or for a general chat to help you continue to stay on the right track following a lesson. We have packages available and the team are on hand daily to talk to you about your needs and goals. Other than just helping you hit the ball better our coaches will:

  • Offer ongoing support
  • Help your mental approach to the game
  • Give you clear direction with practice plans
  • Share drills and exercises to ensure post lesson practice is helping
  • Create a clear blueprint to improvement

First timers can enjoy lesson one at 50% OFF, whilst returning customers can enjoy £10 OFF one lesson in May. Learn more about our team here.

Club Fitting

Are you 100% sure your clubs are right for you? Straight off the rack golf clubs are great, but not for everyone! Every golfer is different, from size to technique and ability meaning every golfer will need clubs specific to their needs (which, for some may just be off the rack!) from the club type, flexibility, loft and lie and so on.

Our fitting service is completely FREE because we want to ensure all our customers find out what is right for them. The right equipment will have a huge impact on the way you play the game and therefore is one of our 5 fixes this May. Book in your local AFGolfStore and enjoy a FREE fit to see what works best for you.

Loft & Lie

Did you know, when practicing on hard surfaces including mats, in time your loft and lie angles will begin to alter. It’s not uncommon to hear golfers say comments such as “my 7iron goes the same distance as my 8iron”, and low and behold we discover the loft and lie angles have adjusted causing gapping issues as well as strike and direction issues. We offer a loft and lie service that will allow you to hit shots whilst we check all of your clubs, making corrections where necessary to ensure your clubs are offering the gapping distances you were promised on purchase. Discover more here

Gapping

This is something we encourage all golfers to be doing at least twice a year. A gapping allows us identify how far the ball goes with each club ensuring the gaps between clubs become consistent. By knowing how far you actually hit a golf ball with each club will allow you to hit more greens and save shots! remove the guess work. We encourage an early season gapping for the warmer conditions and again later in the year if you enjoy winter (colder) golf. Gapping sessions are available over all 3 stores, 7 days a week. Learn more here

Talk To Us

We love to talk golf! We are here to help our customers improve, not just serve and say goodbye. Pop in and see us and ask us questions. Ensuring you get the best out of your game is our passion, from talking technique to discovering the perfect length tee peg, we leave no stone unturned. You can find us here

So if you are keen to improve this May, there are 5 key options to help you get the summer golfing season off to the best start!

Should A Beginner Golfer Get Custom Fit Clubs?

A sport with so many variables and so many skills to learn, golf is a challenge for anyone looking to get into the sport. However, can we make the game easier with the right equipment? Should a beginner golfer get custom fit for clubs?

One thing we all recommend for a beginner when getting into golf is golf lessons to ensure the right technique is being taught and that the golfer has a clear understanding of how to make improvements. Usually when starting, it is common for a golfer to borrow equipment, get second hand clubs or buy a start set. After all, golf equipment isn’t the cheapest and is certainly looked at as an investment for a period of time. However, no two people are the same, from different heights, sizes and natural strength and therefore clubs are best performing when tailored to the individuals needs.

If you are a beginner golfer, above average height and having lessons with standard golf clubs you will typically find that making improvements to your game is difficult as you are having to adapt around the wrong equipment. Strike location will be effected and therefore the distance and direction of your shot will be inconsistent and no where near what you desire.

A recommendation would be to have lessons with a coach who has access to a fitting kit, so you can learn with an iron that is suited to your static measurements. Learning will become so much easier. From here if you know you are invested in the sport and are going to pursue we would recommend a FREE club fitting session to get you in the right equipment. This will make long term improvements easier and allow your practice to be effective knowing you have the right equipment to help you improve the game.

At AFGolfStore we have a wide selection of brands, models, shafts and grips to help a beginner get the right setup to help them on their journey. Clubs offering more forgiveness, lighter shafts and so on. Our expert fitting team located in Cambridge, Peterborough or Milton Keynes will leave no stone unturned in finding the clubs you need.

What Is Involved In A Club Fitting At AFGolfStore Cambridge?

When getting a club fitting at AFGolfStore Cambridge, the first thing to mention is that we need to use your current equipment to find a baseline. If you arrive at the store you will be asked to warm up for a couple of minutes whilst your fitter gets to understand the reasons and desire for new clubs. Knowing where we are starting and what we are trying to improve is a critical part of the custom fit journey as it allows the fitter to test the most appropriate products.

Once we understand your needs and have the data from your current equipment, we will explain what we need to change to get to your new goals. That maybe spin rate, ball speed, launch angle or a few other parameters that we can get using Trackman 4 technology. The unique aspect to our Cambridge store over Peterborough and Milton Keynes is we have an outdoors range, so with the use of Trackman feedback you can also see the entire ball flight, using Srixon golf balls. If you are looking for a putting or wedge fitting we can use our outdoors, short game facilities with Titleist PRO V1 golf balls or a ball to suit your game and style.

You will be then asked to test different heads and shafts all whilst measuring the data. For us the data is key but just as important is the players perception of the iron, wood or driver your testing. Do you like the look of it? Do you like the sound of it? Does it feel good off the club face? If you as a player don’t like one of these three things then the club really shouldn’t be going into your bag. Having trust and love for a new club is so important in building confidence the first time your visit the course.

After the correct shaft and head combo are found the fitter will move on the getting the correct length, lie and grip and then will move on to appropriate gapping and bag set up for you.

Our FREE custom fittings are carried out in our fitting studio with all the leading brands. We offer over 10,000 head, shaft and grip combinations from the Callaway, Mizuno, Ping, Titleist, Cobra and Taylormade. Our team will take you through a simple process.

  1. A Warm Welcome
  2. A current analysis of your equipment to provide a baseline
  3. Understanding your current equipment and finding out what is possible
  4. Testing of all new heads and shafts
  5. Measuring for length
  6. Measuring for lie angle
  7. Measuring for grip size and type
  8. Place of order through suppliers or our express build service
  9. Receive and phone call to collect your order

It is important that our PGA Professionals and Expert fitters take the time to ensure you get the correct equipment to help your game. We know the pain of spending money on poor equipment that not only can ruin your golf game and hurt your pocket but also kills your enjoyment.
